It generally takes 6 to 9 months to hold a marriage based green card, after the initial filling of petition. Although green card process time varies by different local district offices but it goes around the same period in normal cases.

If you are a foreign national living with your US citizen spouse in US, then the green card will be applied through Adjustment of Status USCIS form I-485. But if foreign national spouse is outside US, then he/she requires to have K-3 visa first for US entry and later file I-485 petition for permanent residence.

The process starts with the submission of various documents like birth certificate, marriage certificate and other required documents. Along with document submission, a range of forms and petitions needs to be filed including Petition for alien relative (I-130), Application to register permanent residence (I-485),Biographic information (G-325A), Affidavit of support (I-864), Medical examination result (I-693) and other optional applications.

Petition filing is followed by biometrics appointment, which includes fingerprints, signature and photograph. The biometric appointment notice comes after 18 to 30 days after USCIS receipt of notice.

Work authorization and travel approval notification (if applied), is followed by an interview appointment notice. The time duration from the day of filing to interview notice is around 70-90 days; delays can occur due to the failure in providing all the mandatory details and required documents at the beginning.

Both husband and wife have to appear at the USCIS along with their attorney for the green card interview. Couple will be asked personal and relationship questions and questions regarding their day to day activities; in case of false evidence or suspicion, both would be separately questioned.

If the interview is successfully cleared along with the approval of documentation and biometrics, permanent residence card will be issued within 4 to 8 weeks from the interview through mail. In case the time exceeds, couple should be prepared for a Request of Evidence or Notice of deny to their application from USCIS.

The validity period of this issued green card is two years; later for the removal of conditional status, reapplying process can be started by filling USCIS form I-751. After three years of marriage, spouse will be declared as a US citizen.

Now couple can easily apply online for marriage green card. Its user-friendly kit provides a step by step instruction process and USCIS forms.

The entire process can take anywhere from 9 months to 2-3 years.
First they do a fingerprinting, then issue a work permit, then schedule a interview which can take 6 to 9 months.
Following a successful interview, the foreign national spouse will receive a stamp classifying him/her as a Conditional Permanent Resident.
USCIS will mail the Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) approx 4-8 weeks after the successful interview.

After applying for Green Card on marriage basis, you need to go through immigration interview where you will have to prove your marriage is genuine and not a fraud. After doing you will have to wait for anywhere between 4 months to 1 year, after which you get a Conditional Permanent Residence Card. After which immigration department may post your Green Card after another interview.
