Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada is the head of state. Canada has a federal system of parliamentary government and its constitution consisting of written texts and unwritten conventions and traditions govern the legal framework of the country. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ensures the freedom and the basic rights of the Canadians. Since Canada is a constitutional monarchy, the system acknowledges a hereditary or elected monarch as the head of the state. However the head of the government is the Prime Minister and he is elected by the Governor General; along with their cabinet. The Governor General is the representative of the monarch in Canada. The federal parliament comprises of the Queen and the elected House of Commons and an appointed Senate. The current government of Canada is formed by the Conservative Party of Canada.
