"It seems that all visitors to Australia from Canada require a visa. The nature and length of your visit clearly dictates which sort of visa you should apply for.
Should you be visiting as a holiday for less than 3 months, then you should apply for a 'Short Stay ETA Tourist Visa', however, should you intend to stay on any longer than this, you must apply for a 'Long Stay ETA Tourist Visa'. This allows staying for 6 to 12 months as a tourist, but the Australian authorities may request that you provide proof of funds to support your trip.

Alternatively, if you are between the ages of 18 and 30, then it is possible for you to apply for a 'Working Holiday Visa', which gives you the chance to visit Australia for up to a year, and work to support your trip. However, this is clearly aimed at Gap-year students, so may not be perfect for you, although this clearly depends entirely on the nature of your visit.

If you wish to visit Australia for business purposes, then your only option is a 'Short Stay ETA business Visa'. This allows you to stay for up to 3 months in Australia for business purposes. If you are still unsure as to which visa to apply for, then I recommend visiting the Australian visa Bureau's own 'visa advisor' at visabureau.com/Australian/Australianvisatravelwizard for further information. Indeed you do but beware about what happened to Johnny Depp and don't try to smuggle in any dogs.

You can find all the information you need AT THIS LINK.

Sheesh, I just realised this question is from 2008. Hope you enjoyed your visit. :(

Yes, Australia requires Visas for anyone visiting. Go to www.australia.com and click on visas for more information. You need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining on it.

You still need a Visa to visit Australia. Fortunately, Canada is an ETA-eligible country. This means that Canadian do not have a paper visa in their passport to enter Australia as they can use an ETA.

An ETA is electronically linked to your passport and can be valid for up to twelve
months or until your passport expires. With a valid ETA, you can travel to Australia as
often as you want for short stays up to 3 months at a time.

You can apply it  here  www.traveleta.com.au/ or visit www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1

You don't need to apply for a visa, but you have to apply for an ETA. Which is only 20$ US. Here's the website to apply for an ETA :)
