The Republic of Ghana lies 5 degree north of the Equator and has a typical tropical climate especially in the central parts of the country; Ghana lies in western Africa overlooking the Gulf of Guinea to the south while to the north it is bordered by Burkina Faso; to the west lies Cote d'Ivoire and to the east lies Togo. The total land area of Ghana is 238,534 sq km (92,098 sq miles); the population of Ghana is 22,113,000 with about 3 million people living in Accra, the capital.

The climate of the country as a result of being close to the equator is warm throughout the year with the monsoon season occurring between the months of May and October.

Rainforests occupy parts of the country in the south while to the north lie semi arid savanna lands. The major commodities exported by Ghana include timber, cocoa and gold with the country also supplying electricity to the neighboring countries. The world's largest reservoir Lake Volta lies in the eastern part of the country and provides all of the nation's electricity as well as irrigation needs.
