In terms of GDP (gross domestic product), or the total value of goods produced by an economy, Italy is the 11th-12th best performing country in the world.

However, Italy's economy is actually facing quite a challenging time at present - and back in August 2014 declared that the Italian economy had shrunk for the second quarter in a row, signifying a return to financial recession.

And anyone who has spent time in rural southern Italy will have seen that subsistence peasant farming is still alive and well in modern Europe. Wealth is not always about how rich a whole country is.

It depends how you define rich. Compared to countries in Africa, it is very rich. Also I have heard that north Italy is more rich than south Italy. It really depends on how you look at it. Some people here, such as the president, are rich. Some people come in at middle class..according to its ranking.. It's a rich country.
