In the USA the average dress size for a woman has been considered to be an 8, (which is the equivalent of a UK size 10), which means a bust of 35 inches, a waist of 27 inches, and 37.5 inch hips.
However nowadays people in general seem to be getting bigger and wider, and it is now thought that the average dress size is nearer to measurements of bust 41 inches, waist 34 inches, and hips of 43 inches. These measurements correspond to a size 12, (UK size 14).
It is thought that for some years dress manufacturers have been engaged in what is known as "vanity sizing", which means actually making clothes bigger than their stated size.
Despite these averages, there is a great deal of variation amongst American women in sizes, with some women being smaller than average, and some women larger. These differences can also be dependant upon age, and ethnic origin.
