It is highly recommended by the Humane Society of the United States that you do not use an airplane to transport you pet around unless it is absolutely necessary. However if it is unavoidable then there are several airlines that you can use to do so. Southwest airlines is one example of an airline company that will allow you to take pets on board, US airlines and Continental Airlines are two others but you will have to check their website for full details on prices and conditions.

As of 2010, the majority of US airlines will now allow passengers to take small pets on board their flights. American Airlines allows dogs on board in the cabin for a fee of $100 however, make sure you book in advance because they are legally required not to let any more than seven dogs on any one flight. Also, check whether you are allowed to fly your dog when you travel as American Airlines can only fly pets within 48 states and certain countries.

Southwest Airlines will allow passengers to take one small vaccinated pet on board the plane for a fee on $75. The reason they are cheaper than American Airlines is because they count the carry on kennel as one of your carryon bags. However, Southwest Airlines allows you to take your dog on board on a first come first served basis so make sure that you book your flight well in advanced to avoid huge disappointment.

These are just two of the airlines that will allow you to take pets on board in the cabin. Other example include Delta, United Airlines and Continental. Before booking your pet onto any flight, make sure that you read the airline’s terms and conditions on their website carefully before making any bookings to make sure that you know the price and any travel restrictions that are imposed.

I used us air and they charge $100. Each way - they must be in a carrier under the seat and the airline people were not nice about the dog at all. They allow 2 pets per flight

Southwest DOES allow pets in cabin. Will NOT accept them as cargo which is good. I would advise ALL to go to SW website for offical info, instead of taking someones word for it.

Please do your research, Southwest Airlines DOES NOT allow pets in the cabin during flights. In fact they are one of the few airlines that restricts pets from being with you while traveling. Your answer almost caused me a major problem when I tried to book my flight with SW. I wouldn't leave my poodle alone in the cargo hold for 6 hours and doubt that any real animal lover would. Please get your info straight before giving us advice, thank you.
