Canadians are afraid of the dark because, half the year, we have what is called the "Midnight Sun." For half the year, we only get about 1 hour of dark a day, everywhere above the 49th parallel. The other half of the year, it is pitch dark.
We dislike the dark for many reasons. One, wolverines are most active at night. It is also very hard to aim your crossbow in the dark. As well, building an igloo in the dark is very difficult, as the snow does not melt and freeze to form sturdy walls, like in the day-time. As well, our dogs do not have the best nightvision, so our dogsleighs are not very efficient.
Perhaps it is less of a fear, and more a dislike of the dark, for the inconviences it causes us as a people.
