I'm going to NYC for the first time - what should I definitely do/see while I am there? Or what should I avoid at all cost?!

'Two Boots' pizza on Bleeker Street. Good slice.

A play or musical on Broadway, of course. Take a good look and you might hit tickets for a play starring a known actor - always a treat. Phantom of the Opera is pretty amazing (if not exactly an adventurous choice) and they have been playing it on the tailor-made stage in the Majestic Theatre for like 25 years.

The High-Line, an old raised train track they have turned into a garden walk up above the city. Great on a sunny day. Try the iced-coffee from a small stand under the bridge.

The MoMa too, of course. And many hotdogs from street vendors with extra sauerkraut. Clubbing in Williamsburg and Meatpacking district (prepare to spend cash here) is good. I won't get more specific with nightlife because I havent been to NYC for over a year now - try for tips from a local about what's going on. This means starting a conversation with someone cool ;)

Welcome. Correction... the play does not need to be on Broadway. New York's theatre scene is of course much bigger than that - this can make it hard to navigate though

That's coincidental! Had just decided to wait until in NYC to see what's going on theatre wise :) I've booked a NY Pass to go & see some of the regular tourist attraction & will then see wherecI end up. Thanks again :)

I've never been to New York so I'm sure someone else will drop by and give you a better example of specific places to visit - however, one of my friends recently came back from New York and they were raving about a part of Brooklyn called "Dumbo".

Apparently it stands for "Down Under the Brooklyn Manhattan Overpass" and is the new up and coming hipster quarter.

So if you're interested in counter-culture and edgy art galleries on a budget, then that's somewhere you may want to check out.

In terms of things to avoid, I heard the Empire State Building isn't that impressive! Apparently there are better vantage points to enjoy, and the queues to get to the viewing deck can be quite long.

Well, going to New York was an amazing experience and one I will never forget. With the NYPass I did a lot of the top tourist attractions: Top of the Rock (day), Empire State (night), river cruise, Guggenheim (James Turrell currently the big attraction), MoMA - would recommend them all! I also used a water taxi and hopped on and off all day, including South Street Sea Port, Dumbo, Greenwich etc. I went to see Mama Mia on Broadway which was hilarious (reduced tickets from the TCKTS booth in Time Square). The 9/11 tribute was very moving (I cried - a lot). Great cocktails at Connolly's (Lexington and 47th).

Things I didn't like so much were that it is really hard to find veggie food (who knew!) and eating out is very pricey. Also, so much construction going on in the financial district it is hot, dusty and noisy. Also, it takes soooooo long to take off from JFK...

If you get the chance to go - take it.
