Lourdes, in France. Head and shoulders the most contrived, overhyped tourist trap, ever.
It is reputed to be the site where a French peasant girl saw apparitions of "Mary", a hundred and fifty years ago. How exciting. There are literally scores of second and third rate hotels and cheesy religious junk shops, all shoehorned around a church and a dingy cliffside grotto with a painted statue of Mary stuck in it, which in turn lies near a trickling hole of cold murky water claimed to possess healing properties (which is sold in bottles,...surprise!). What a disappointment. Swarms of "pilgrims" tripping over each other to pack into the stale-smelling "Sanctuary", and garbage blowing around.
Our time there was saved from being a complete fail by the superb wine-tasting junket later that evening. Recommend the delightful Marseilles, instead.
