I've never really had the need to take public transportation. Way out here in the burbs, we only have an occasional bus which is mostly for the senior citizens.

I live very close to downtown and take the bus all the time. I never learned to drive, but I don't feel that I am missing out on anything.

I'm about 50 miles from the nearest city. We don't even have a train station.

I like to drive .. But it's most fun riding on a train.  I used to take a commuter train to work every day and loved it.  My husband and I are planning to take the train to NYC this summer.  A great way to see the sights and be able to relax along the way too.

That must be quite an "education" Baileys .. :) I wish we had buses that were reliable and anywhere nearby .. but we never had had anywhere I've lived.

There was a shooting at the bus station (where everyone transfers buses) a couple of weeks ago. I was right there when it happened. 4 kids got shot, no one died though. That was the scariest thing I've ever experienced.

Horrible! This world gets scarier and scarier. I've never been that close to any shooting, thankfully.

We are getting quite the rail system in L.A. They've made it out to the suburbs too. It's very convenient. I have a train station about a mile from my house. I can take it almost anywhere.

The public transport system is pretty good in Oz. Ferries are my favourites, but they mostly only go where there's water for them to get their feet wet. Other than that I'd rather go by train. As soon as I sit down, out comes a book and I become oblivious of my surroundings until we are magically deposited at our destination.

My round trip to work was something over 60 kms and when you multiply that 5 or 6 times a week over a period of 40 years, I probably travelled far enough to get to the moon and back. (Makes me wonder why they made such a big fuss about the Apollo 11 landing.) I must have worked my way through three entire libraries during that time.

Magnificent river, Happy.

And, Jan, it's because we pronounce it Oztralia, so it's a simple abbreviation. That pronunciation is not universal, I know. Queen Elizabeth (and presumably others of the so-called upper classes) pronounce it Orstralia.

I use my time on the bus for reading time too. Sometimes I just like to listen to all the conversations going on around me. I have heard some pretty interesting things over the years.
