The current duty free allowance for China is listed as two bottles of spirits, each not exceeding 750ml in quantity. A spirit is defined as alcohol over 12% proof.

Any amounts over these limit which are deemed for personal use will be released upon payment of customs duty.

If you are thinking about bringing cigarettes into China too, then the allowances are as follows:

  • 400 cigarettes
  • 100 cigars
  • 500g tobacco

There are no restrictions on perfume, providing it is for personal
use.

Some other things to remember when passing through customs in China:

Customs officials may seize audio and videotapes, books, records and CDs to check for overtly pornographic, political or religious material. Border control is far more stringent in this respect than in other countries, therefore you will need to complete a baggage declaration form upon arrival, declaring all valuables (such as cameras, watches and jewellery) which may be checked on departure.
