If you are a British citizen you must be holding a valid UK and Ireland Passport, when arriving in France. These will be checked upon arrival, however if you have an identity card that has been provided by the Gibraltar authorities and given a stamp of approval by the British authorities to travel in the European Union (EU). A visa is not needed for short stays (less that three months), only a British passport or an identity card with the stamp of approval is needed for a visit to France. For Irish citizens the only accepted travel document is a valid Irish Passport and no visa is needed. Other people of differently nationality will need different travel documents to enter France.
Here are some examples; Americans will only need a valid American passport, however if they wish to travel to St. Pierre and Miquelon Islands they will not need their passports, but they must have their American Identity cards. This also applies to Canadians, but obviously Canadians must have Canadian passports and Identity cards.
In the Schengen Area, also known as the borderless region, a Schengen visa can be provided to travellers wishing to travel to more than one country in the Schengen Area. There are 25 countries in the Schengen Area and they are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. All of theses countries are in the EU apart from Bulgaria, Cyprus and Switzerland. A Schengen visa allows the traveller to roam freely between the borders of these countries. However as you are a British citizen most of these countries will allow you in with a passport and without a visa.
