You will need A French visa OR a Shengen visa.
A shengen visa is a visa covering 15 different counties, all of which belong to the "schengen accord". Any of the member countries can issue a visa which will be accepted not only in the issuing county but any of the other 14 countries as well, the visa is quoted as a specific number of days (eg a 20 day schengen visa issued by Belgium.) With this visa one can visit Belgium for - lets say - 5 days then go to france for 3 days, then go to a non-schengen country for a month - there will still be 12 days of the visa remaining for trips to Germany, Italy Spain or any of the other schengen States.
