In order for your child to travel between countries, they will need a passport. But if you are unsure about the travel requirements you should get in touch with the ferry company that you are traveling with for more information.

Since 1998, children under the age of 16 have been required to have their own passports rather than being added onto their parent's. Children's passports last for 5 years and must be renewed every 5 years if the child continues to travel until they reach the age of 16.

  • Planning ahead for a child's passport.
It is not difficult to obtain a child's passport, however you will need to make sure that you apply within plenty of time. A lot of people need to get a new passport until just a couple of months before their holiday before applying, which causes a great amount of stress.

Passport applications are usually accepted within two or three weeks after the application has been sent off. These predicted times will be rather longer for popular school holidays such as Christmas or Summer vacations. If you wish to go on holiday in July, then the best time to apply for a passport would be May at the latest.

  • Requirements for a child's passport.
The first thing that you will need to apply for a child's passport is their full birth certificate with the details of both parents, or the child's adoption certificate. If you don't have the birth certificate or adoption certificate of your child then you should contact your state's registration services.

You will also need evidence of the parent's nationality or status of immigration when the child getting the passport was born. The parent's birth certificate will suffice for this requirement.

The final thing that you will need is to identical passport sized photos of your child taken within the last month. There are certain requirements that need to be followed when it comes to taking passport pictures. If these requirements are not adhered to then this will result in your child's passport application being rejected.
