There are approximately 147 miles between Washington, DC and Ocean City, Maryland. When driving between the two it will take about 3 hours. Ocean City is situated along the Atlantic Ocean, and has 10 miles of white sand beaches that make it the ideal place for swimming, surfing, and kite flying and jogging. It is a beach town that also includes miniature golf courses, shopping malls, movie theaters, and the famous Ocean City Boardwalk, which stretches for three miles. The town is very popular with tourists and families with hotels and camping facilities available. Ocean City has a population of just over 7,000 people but during weekends in the summer the number of people in the area can swell to over 300,000. Ocean City has a long history of both commercial and recreational fishing and there are numerous charter boats available for fishing. Fish that are popular in the area include billfish, tuna and wahoo. One of the largest fishing tournaments in the world, the White Marlin Open is held in Ocean City, boasting prize money in excess of $1 million. Washington, DC is the capital of the United States, and has a population of over 600,000 residents. This rises to over a million during the week because of the amount of people commuting to work in the district. DC stands for District of Columbia, and the city was founded on July 16, 1790. The district is not part of any US state and is therefore overseen by the federal government. Washington, DC is sometimes known simply as DC, and is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland. The metropolitan area, of which the district is part of, is the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the United States.
