Since the release of the novel "The Beach", Thailand has seen a massive increase in tourists, and the undiscovered beaches on the southern peninsula are bursting at the seams with tourists.

If you want to see the real Thailand unaffected by tourism you'll need to avoid the pretty beaches, and head north or north east. I'd recommend a map and motorbike, and just head into the unknown, you could even cross the borders and go into :

  • Laos
  • Vietnam
  • Burma
  • Cambodia
Thai people will generally be very welcoming, and I feel it's a very safe country, so take a phrase book and some patience and you'll have lots of fun.

Thailand’s islands are some of the most visited places on planet tourism. The whole of Phuket island has become associated with its most popular tourist destinations. And is a restless and chaotic metropolis and an essential part of a trip to Thailand. Especially The spiritual city of Chiang Mai is a much quieter than Bangkok but still an essential and best place to visit if you want to see the best of Thailand.
